Yes, that's exactly it. Especially, Novalis lamented the loss of the mystical in Protestantism and his fragments on Magical Philosophy were specifically aimed at finding a new-old path. For example:
"The world of spirits is indeed open to us -- it is always there. If we were to suddenly lose our close-mindedness, we would see ourselves in the middle of it."
So glad you are doing this. I read the book just a couple of years back, checked out of the library, and am thrilled to be getting a copy from Sul with your intro and annotation.
How exciting! I've been a fan of MacDonald since coming across a Spanish copy of Lilith in my then local library in Spain in the early 90s... Impacted by the power of vision the man had, almost certain that he was literarily travelling through those inner worlds described in Lilith, Phantastes and the fairy tales... This will be my 4th copy of Phantastes, looking forward to your views on it!
And the book arrived today! I went firstly to the chapter where the old lady in the cottage shows him the hand with the Sign, this always intrigued me and many years ago I did actually had a similar dream with another mark.. Anyway I was looking forward to your thoughts on that but, at least in my copy, the footnote to that section is missing! Also, I noticed the "sigil" is drawn differently compared with earlier publications... Intriguing minds want to know more!
(call that the “soul” if [it] helps)...... minor subediting eratum.... thought you'd want to know, by all means remove this comment after... please .from Cape Town j!

I think I read it years ago; I feel a thrill of anticipation toward rediscovering a long-lost friend.
