Something that only occurred to me because of your earlier comment is that the move from reciprocal agreements with gods and spirits to that of binding contractural ones seems to be concurrent with the birth of wage labor (probably both arising from the same shift).
Contracts limit the relationship to mere material terms. Wages similarly limit the relationship: all the owner must do is pay a wage and the obligation is done.
Reciprocal relationships are “messier” and more ongoing and they expand..
The newer contractural relationships with labor and spirits follow the logic of the reason why it is said that you pay a prostitute not for the sex, but so that she will go away after: no reciprocal relationship allowed.
