I try not to let myself think too much about this because it's deeply depressing, but it's quite possible we're in a similar situation to the one which created the "New Left" in the 60's and 70's. Back then, the Congress for Cultural Freedom (a CIA funnel) funded anti-Marxist leftists in the United States and Europe through front organizations (including even the travel guide Fodor's...).
Most of those leftists didn't actually know where the funding was coming from, so it's not possible to say they were "bought" or willing dupes. But what resulted was a lot more influence for certain analyses and a lot less for others, effectively killing off any broad anti-capitalism in the US and elsewhere.
It's really difficult to imagine something similar isn't happening again. We won't find out one way or another for decades, just as we didn't about the Congress for Cultural Freedom until much later.
