WOWZA!!! These pieces keep getting more and more powerful. Not God, but Rhyd is in the details!!
You must be an old soul to have survived all of this and can articulate it with such authenticity. Thanks too for enlightening me on the continued entanglements of the evangelicals with the US, and world politics.
I have just caught up on this series and am really enjoying it.
Have to ask you a question, though. At the end of Mieville's Kraken, the main character makes a choice which resolves the plot. It seems to come very easily to him. It's hardly a choice I ever expect to be offered but, although I have a very similar background to the main character, I don't think i'd find the choice as easy as he did. Would you?
This is incredibly embarrassing... I don’t actually remember how it ends. I do remember not being happy with the ending, but then again I think that’s the same feeling I’ve had after every one of his books...
Ah, well the thing is, it would be just the most horrible spoiler if I explained it here. I think it's probably fair to say that there is a reason I think it's relevant... Let me see if I can work out how to use Substack to remind you privately.
So sorry you had to go through such a difficult childhood. Absolutely eye opening about the reach of the Christian tentacles , I’ve heard bits of it before but this was a good reminder of how fucked up humans can be. And you sir, to go through all this and survive it and somewhat come out the other side, scars, trauma and all, is a reminder of how good humans can be. Thank you
I’d be interested in your thoughts on the recent rise of events that connect people. I know that is vague, but I’d say the common theme is that events such as the one you are traveling to bring together people who share certain common interests and values. Another one of my intellectual virtual tentacles has been stimulated by the Journey On podcast summit which is a completely unrelated event involving an intersection of personal growth and horse training. One thing I see is a rise in people traveling to such events and having a great time and learning important things about themselves. But I really wonder what this means for our society. So many of us feel more connected to people from thousands of miles away than to those local to us. I’m no stranger to this either. I’d much rather have a beer with people I feel a connection with from far away than my annoying neighbor. But I wonder how healthy that is. I also wonder how much this attitude descends from Christianity. The idea of being part of a spiritual brotherhood where we have more in common with those who believe similarly to ourselves than to those near us seems suspiciously like the brotherhood of believers which is to be prioritized over worldly relationships.
Much love, mate. Thanks.
Ah, that was vicariously refreshing

No agenda in asking. Just would love to know.

Incredibly moving and emotional journey, a longing to discover the world and one's inner peace and beauty.
